What are the real dangers of fried foods?

It is tempting to eat fried food in many cuisines, but eating too much of it can be harmful. Researchers have been studying the relationship between eating a lot fried food and a poor heart for a long time. But that’s just the beginning. Eating fried food may increase your stroke risk, along with your weight.

Your Heart and Fried Foods

Fried foods contain high amounts of trans and saturated fats that can raise your blood cholesterol and damage the lining of arteries. The damaged areas of your blood vessels eventually develop plaque which narrows and complicates blood pumping.

If it helps, imagine your arteries like pipes in a system of plumbing. Over time, pipes accumulate dirt and debris which eventually causes obstructions. This process is referred to as “atherosclerosis”, when it occurs in your arteries. Atherosclerosis increases your risk of developing heart disease.

Researchers have recently investigated this phenomenon by evaluating the nutrition and health data of more than 1.2 millions people in a Meta-analysis of 19 Studies. According to the researchers, fried food consumption is strongly linked with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CAD), major cardiac events (such a heart attack), heart failure and stroke.

Fried food and your risk of stroke

A stroke is caused by plaque buildup within the arteries that deliver blood to the brain. Brain injury can occur due to restricted blood flow. You could have a stroke if a piece of plaque breaks and reaches the brain.

Can you make fried foods healthier?

It’s understandable that we love our fried food, and the trend is to make it healthier. You can still indulge in fried foods, but you should use healthier oils, like olive or coconut oil. These are unsaturated fats. To reduce the oil absorption, you can change the oil more frequently or add baking soda into your batter.

Even better? Air fryers eliminate the need for oil in frying. The same results can be achieved without adding oil. There are recipes that call for some oil but the amount is reduced dramatically when using an air fryer.

Summary

It is well-known that eating fried food in large amounts can be harmful to your health. You can enjoy fried foods occasionally, but between these times, opt for lighter recipes or an air fryer.
